Web3 Payments Users Can Finally Trust

Redesigned the crypto copy trading flow to address users’ locked fund issues during Crypto-Arsenal’s transition to Web3

Background

Crypto-Arsenal is an automated trading platform that connects tech experts with everyday investors. It enables anyone to trade cryptocurrency automatically without the need for coding skills or constant market monitoring.

What Users Struggled With

Users had to deposit money when using the Profit Sharing payment method. If the strategy did not make a profit, their funds were locked, and they could not withdraw. This lack of control left many users feeling frustrated and stuck.

The 4 Steps I Took to Redesign

Step 1: Understand the Goals

Identifying the Trap: Why Users Felt "Stuck"

When users discovered a strategy that showed promising results, they had the option to replicate it by choosing between two payment methods: Profit Sharing or Monthly Subscription. However, those who selected Profit Sharing were required to pre-deposit funds in advance. If the strategy failed to generate profits, their pre-deposited funds were locked, and users had no way to withdraw them. This lack of control left many users feeling frustrated, trapped, and discouraged from using the platform again.

So, what was my mission in this project?

My main goal was to redesign the payment flow and UI for users copying a strategy, making the whole experience much smoother. At the same time, I wanted to bring the payment and trading experience up to Web3 standards. This helped Crypto-Arsenal move forward in its bigger journey from Web2 to Web3.

Step 2: Explore Industry Standards

To redesign the payment flow and support the transition to Web3, I analyzed leading platforms to understand how they structure trading and wallet flows, from both UX and technical perspectives.

Studied how competitors designed their trading flows and wallet connection processes

Analyzed competitors’ product documentation to understand product structure and technical constraints

Mapped out the structure of competitor platforms to evaluate how trading pages and wallet features were organized

Step 3: Brainstorm & Design

Task Flow Redesign

Based on earlier competitive analysis and user feedback, we found that users were satisfied with the subscription model.
We shifted the flow to focus solely on subscription durations, which eliminated the need for pre-deposits and directly addressed users’ frustration with permanently locked funds.
Additionally, we introduced a payment confirmation step: a critical update to align with Web3 standards, where users expect to confirm transactions through their own wallets, rather than relying on automatic deductions from a centralized platform wallet.

What could be improved for the next version?

The design allowed users to easily copy the payment amount and wallet address via dedicated copy icons, making manual transfers more accessible. However, the prominent “Pay” button led many users to instinctively click it, which triggered a direct payment via their connected wallet instead. As a result, users often missed the manual transfer option and found it difficult to complete the process on their own. This mismatch in expectations created confusion and friction in the payment flow. Additionally, we realized that users should be able to select the appropriate network and coin type before proceeding, to ensure clarity and prevent potential transfer errors.

Step 4: Final Delivery - From Design to Real User Impact

To solve the issue of locked funds, we moved away from the previous Profit Sharing and Monthly Subscription model. Instead, we allowed users to simply select a subscription plan based on duration, giving them full control over their spending.

To support payment confirmation, the final design, refined through several rounds of iteration, introduced a Payment Method and Network Selection step. In this step, users choose between paying with a connected wallet or through manual transfer. Based on their selection, the flow dynamically adapts, either triggering the wallet plugin for direct payment, or displaying a pop-up with the exact amount and wallet address for manual transfer, along with a QR code to support quick scanning and reduce manual errors during the transfer process. This approach ensures that users with different payment habits can complete the process intuitively and with confidence.

Behind the Scenes: Reflection and Next Steps

Challenges I Faced

I wasn’t sure how to begin the competitive analysis. My first attempt was unclear, and I was asked to revise and present it again. After asking my supervisor and a senior teammate, I realized I could study their documents and YouTube videos to better understand how users interact with similar platforms.

I was uncertain whether users should be allowed to edit their choices at the final confirmation step. After analyzing competitors and user expectations, I decided to remove the edit feature to avoid forcing users to restart the flow for small changes.

Next Steps - If I Could Go Further

I also redesigned the payment amount settings for strategy creators, but I suspect other payment-related areas across the platform could benefit from UX improvements.
I would like to conduct a full audit of all payment touchpoints, like deposit, withdrawal, and subscription flows, to identify additional friction points.
My goal would be to ensure a consistent, secure, and user-friendly payment experience across the entire platform.
